Metadata tips, tools and tricks : How to write good description for your stock photos / footage

Captions and descriptions are often considered to be the same thing, but they are not, even though some microstock sites does not require caption at all. They have it anyway and it's being "cut" from -your description. So for better results think about adding the first 5-8 words like a caption. For more info about adding proper caption read this post:

A well-written description needs to provide all the needed information for the rest of the metadata fields. They are meant to be functional and describe file as much as possible in around 200 characters. When searching outside the microstock site, the description is almost always shown under the link that leads to the file that the buyer was searching for. I will give you the example similar to one that I used in the previous post : How to add a proper caption for stock photo / footage that will attract buyers

I have footage that recently got approved by stock agencies where my son, two years old boy is painting with watercolors. For the search "Cute Two Years Old Boy Painting" when searched for video files those are results:
for realtime search query click here: Cute Two Years Old Boy Painting
as you can see, this time Dreamstime SEO Tim did the best job. Only the first result on the first page is not my footage. Notice how description is showing right under the link to the stock site:

So before opening a link leading to actual footage, buyers are able to see exactly what is going on there. That's why it needs to be as specific as you can make it in 200 or less characters.

To do that ask yourself: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How

  1. Who will determinate subject. in this case two years old boy. What is he doing? Painting.
  2. When is not really important for this footage but two years old can indicate early childhood.
  3. Where? it can be house or childcare.
  4. Why? When asking this question think about in which concept this footage can be used. So for examle child painting can be used to describe early development of children, developing imagination and creativity, back to school, first day of school, the prescoolers activity... but it can also be used to describe autism as the child is avoiding eye contact in the footage, psychological problems ( if the painting is dark) or similar.
  5. How? When asking this question you need to think about two things. Describing how is an action done and the technical side of footage. So how is he painting? focused, stabbing a brush into the notebook, bored.... look at the footage and find the proper description for a boy and activity that he is doing. For the technical side, include the type of shot (Medium shot), camera moves ( static shot), etc.

As i said before, some agencies are using first part of description instead caption and including it in URL lenght. So try to combine WHO, WHEN,WHERE and WHY in the first 5-8 words and after that add the technical side and how is action performed.
Here is an example of description : "

Cute two years old boy painting with watercolors early development of imagination or back to school concept"

The next big part of metadata, and maybe most important is the keywording part. In the next post I will write about choosing proper keywords and expressions as a keyword, keywording tools, and keyword research to improve your ranking on stock sites and other search engines...
